Breed Recommendations

Tilapia(Cichlids)

Even though there are different Tilapia, the Oreochromis Niloticus is best for raising at captivity.

Why to choose Tilapia:

Nguju Fisheries recommends farmers to farm monosex to increase the body mass needed in the market.This is because;

  1. Faster Growth Rate in Males.
  2. ~ Male O. niloticus grow significantly faster than females.
    ~ Females expand energy on reproduction rather tan growth,which slows their weight gain.
  3. Prevents Uncontrolled Breeding
  4. ~ Tilapia are prolific breeders, especially in mixed-sex systems.
    ~ Overpopulation in ponds leads to:
    • Stunteg growth.
    • High competition for food and space.
    • Poor water quality.
    • Monosex males eliminates this problem,making growth more predictable.
  5. Better Feed Conversion & Uniform Size
  6. ~ With only males, the fish grow at a similar rate.
    ~ Easier to harvest,market and process due to uniformity.
    ~ More efficient feed use,reducing cost and increasing profitability.

African Catfish (Clarius gariepinus)

Why Nguju Fisheries encourage the farmers to farm catfish;

  1. Good feed conversion ratio(FCR 1.2)
  2. External air-breathing abilities.
  3. Relative tolerance of below-average(sub-optional) water quality conditions.
  4. High survival rate after fingerling stage.
  5. Adaptable to polyculture with Nile tilapia-based farming systems.
  6. Good flesh quality.
  7. Low in lipid(fat)and high in protein

Why catfish meat has a high demand;

Mild Flavour
~ Catfish has a very mild, non-fishy taste,making it more appealing to children who may be picky eaters.
Soft Texture
~ The flesh of catfish is tender and easy to chew , which is ideal for children, especially younger ones who may struggle with tougher meats.
High in Protein
Catfish is a great source of high-quality protein, which is essential for children's growth, development, and immune function.
Low in Mercury
Compared to many other types of fish, farmed catfish generally have low levels of mercury, making it safer for young children to consume regularly.
Rich in Nutrients
• Omega-3 fatty acids (for brain development) • Vitamin D (for strong bones and immune health) • Vitamin B12 (for energy and brain function) • Phosphorus and selenium
Affordable & Accessible
The price is highly favorable and available since it is now farmed in the captive systems.
